How to Crochet a Candle Holder with Jasmine Stitch

The Jasmine Stitch creates a beautiful flower-like texture that looks especially lovely around small glass candle holders. For one candle holder, you will need only about 25 metres of 3 mm BIGcord, so this is also a great project for trying a new colour or using a smaller amount of cord.

🧶 What you will need

• approx. 25 m of 3 mm BIGcord

• 10 mm crochet hook

• a small glass candle holder

• scissors

• yarn needle for weaving in the ends

We used a 10 mm crochet hook. Ideally, choose a smooth hook without a noticeable transition between the metal part and the handle. This makes it easier to pull the cord through the larger number of loops used in the Jasmine Stitch. You can also use a smaller hook if you prefer a tighter stitch.

Choosing the bottom

The bottom can be crocheted with single crochet stitches, worked in Jasmine Stitch as well, or you can use a 5 cm wooden base. In this tutorial, we will show you the version with a simple single-crochet bottom.

Written Pattern

Step 1 – Magic ring

Start with a magic ring and work 7 single crochet stitches (SC) into the ring. Finish the round with a slip stitch (Sl St). Start the next round with chain 1 (CH 1).

Step 2 – Crochet the bottom

In the second round, work 2 single crochet stitches into every other stitch. At the end of the round, you should have 11 stitches.

The bottom is finished. Now we can start working the Jasmine Stitch.

Step 3 – Start the first Jasmine Stitch

Start with chain 1. Yarn over, insert the hook into the stitch as shown in the video and repeat this 3 times. You should now have 7 loops on the hook.

Step 4 – Add the next set of loops

Skip one stitch. Yarn over and repeat the same process 3 times into the next stitch. You should now have 13 loops on the hook.

Step 5 – Close the petals

Hold the yarn with your finger as shown in the video, yarn over and pull the yarn through 13 loops. Secure with a slip stitch.

Step 6 – Continue with the next petals

Chain 1. Yarn over and insert the hook into the stitch 3 times, as shown in the video. Work the next 3 loops into the same stitch used in the previous step. Skip one stitch and work another 3 loops into the next stitch. You should now have 19 loops on the hook.

Again, hold the yarn with your finger, yarn over and pull through all the loops as shown in the video. Secure with a slip stitch. Continue in the same way until the end of the round.

Step 7 – Finish the first Jasmine round

When you reach the end of the round, work 3 more loops into the first stitch of the round. You should now have 25 loops on the hook. Finish with a slip stitch.

The bottom petals of the flowers are now finished.

Step 8 – Second round of Jasmine Stitch

Start with chain 1. Yarn over and insert the hook into the centre of the flower. Repeat 3 times, then work 3 more loops into the centre of the next flower.

Pull the yarn through 13 loops and secure with a slip stitch.

Step 9 – Complete the flowers

Chain 1 and continue with the next pair of petals. Repeat the same process around the candle holder, always working into the centres of the flowers from the previous round.

Step 10 – Finish

After completing the last flower, make chain 1. Instead of finishing with another slip stitch, weave the yarn end through the first stitch as shown in the video.

Weave in the beginning and end of the yarn, and your crochet candle holder is finished.

Tips for working the Jasmine Stitch

The Jasmine Stitch is more advanced than basic crochet stitches because several elongated loops are worked together. We recommend following the written pattern together with the video, especially when learning where to insert the hook and how to close the petals.
